​The Prescott Chamber of Commerce held the quarterly breakfast meeting on March 1st at the Prescott Resort and Conference Center. At the meeting, Prescott’s Mayor Phil Goode presented his State of the City Address, and the 2021 Prescott Chamber Chair officially passed the gavel to her predecessor for 2022.
The quarterly meeting and breakfast was emceed by Sandford Cohen of Arizona’s Hometown Radio Group who recognized the many chamber sponsors and took time to honor military veterans and local dignitaries.

The Prescott Chamber of Commerce helped celebrate a ribbon cutting ceremony for GG'S Unique Boutique. Peter Medal, with My Home Group Realty presented the ribbon cutting at the Master of Ceremonies. Dignitary Judy Sultrop spoke on behalf of US Senator Mark Kelly's office. Dignitary Jeff Timm spoke on behalf of US Congressman Paul Gosar's Office.

​Christmas is alive and well aboard Verde Canyon Railroad. The wonder of the holiday season begins on Santa’s secret tracks to the heart of the North Pole. Everyone knows Santa’s main ride is a sleigh, but surprise! He rides a train too!

Conveniently located just outside of Sedona, Arizona, the Verde Canyon Railroad’s Magical Christmas Journey™ is a fresh, fun take on holiday trains, featuring an all-original storybook journey highlighting the railroad’s famed relationship with local wildlife.

The trip to the North Pole is merely one brilliant facet of the festive evening experience. The story begins with the extensively illuminated depot and miniature Birds-Eye Village. Prior to boarding, children can strap on a pair of eagle wings and soar through an adorable village featuring 10 tiny houses on a town square. The kids can imagine what Flurry, our live bald eagle, sees when in flight. This unique aspect is inspired by Verde Canyon Railroad’s relationship with Liberty Wildlife of Arizona who provides an educational bald eagle that visits Verde Canyon Railroad regularly. Adults are not to be left out, as the details of this charming tiny town provide entertainment for everyone.

All are encouraged to come decked in their outrageous Christmas fashions, ranging from wild “ugly sweaters,” funny antlers and twinkly hats, to several generations sporting matching sweatshirts or jammies. Passengers will find an abundance of fun photo-ops around the depot grounds and savor festive food and beverages that will satisfy your seasonal cravings. The train, transformed into a holiday vision, extensively decorated on both the indoor and open-air cars, beckons passengers to board for the journey to pick up a VSP (Very Special Passenger) eagerly awaiting the train’s arrival at the North Pole: Santa Claus!

As soon as the train departs the Clarkdale depot, happy elves encourage everyone to venture onto the open-air viewing cars to make a wish when traveling through the Magical Tunnel, and wave to the illuminated Arizona animals that dance along the track, pointing the way to Santa’s home.
Slowly rolling up on the North Pole, life-size buildings punctuate the star-filled high desert darkness with brilliant lights and colors, wit, and whimsy. Not only do the kiddos catch a glimpse of where all the magic happens … Santa’s Workshop, Mrs. Claus’ Bakery and the Polar Post Office where Christmas dreams are delivered, but they’ll discover where Rudolph learned his tricks … the Reindeer Flight School complete with a well-lit landing strip! And those wacky elves, entertaining passengers and assisting Santa, all earned their talents at the Elf Training School. Wonder just where do all those zany Christmas sweaters come from? The Ugly Sweater Factory of course! For those misbehaving, beware because Santa has a Naughty Kids Coal Mine. Before you know it, Santa is aboard the train for the trip home, spending time in each car visiting with families and sharing a small gift with each child.

“The practice of medicine is a calling in which your heart will be exercised equally with your head.”

These words were spoken more than 100 years ago by a physician known as the founder of modern medicine. Yet, even today, they perfectly describe the experience of LaNette Smith, MD, an accomplished breast surgeon who is joining Dignity Health, Yavapai Regional Medical Group, Breast Surgery.
“There’s a passion in the people who care for patients at the Breast Care Center and YRMG Breast Surgery,” says Dr. Smith. “They bring a combination of compassion and enthusiasm to their work that’s familiar to me. I immediately felt at home with their approach to patient care.”

Called to Care

Dr. Smith’s journey to the medical profession began at an early age. As a child, she admired the family practice physician who cared for people in the small town in which she was raised. During high school, she volunteered at that physician’s clinic to learn more about the world of medicine.
“I enjoyed the relationship the doctor had with his patients and the way he helped them,” says Dr. Smith. “It felt like my calling.”

Dr. Smith pursued her calling at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine—Tulsa, where she earned a medical degree and embarked on a medical residency. Her excellent fine motor skills led her to specialize in surgery, a high-energy specialty that would also expose her to new technologies and techniques. And, there were the patients. An empathetic listener and effective communicator – like the doctor in her hometown – Dr. Smith understood the importance of the physician-patient relationship.

Specializing in Breast Surgery

During her five-year surgical residency, Dr. Smith became the preferred surgeon for patients diagnosed with breast cancer.

“Breast surgery patients are different from most surgical patients,” Dr. Smith explains. “You form a long-term relationship with them, you share life experiences, and of course, you surgically care for them. All of these aspects of care are important to me as a breast surgeon.”

While she was gaining general surgical experience during her residency, Dr. Smith also wanted to be specifically prepared to care for patients – women and men – facing breast cancer. The best way to accomplish this, she decided, was through a breast surgery fellowship. At the time, there were only 11 such fellowships in the nation. She decided to join one at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock.

Treating the Whole Patient

During her years as a breast surgeon, Dr. Smith has experienced what it means to treat the whole patient.

“I listen to patients and am respectful of their desires,” she says. “I give them good, accurate medical information to help guide their decisions. In fact, I’ve probably spent more time counseling patients and involved in social discussions related to care than I have in surgery.”

The month of October is breast cancer awareness month and the Prescott Police Department will kick-off our fourth annual “Pink Patch Project” beginning Friday, October 1st.  All proceeds raised will go directly to Dignity Health Yavapai Regional Medical Center Breast Care Center to support early detection efforts, palliative care, cutting-edge treatment and comfort care for patients in our community.
 
This will be the fourth year our department will help to support this cause.  We will be changing our uniform patches pink.  The 2021 patch design is new allowing you to add to your collection.  The patches are available for a $5.00 donation at the Prescott Police Department, Prescott City Hall, the Chamber of Commerce, and both YRMC gift shops in Prescott and Prescott Valley.
 
We will be hosting several events throughout the area and we invite the community to come out to as many events as they can to help show that “We are Prescott Strong”.  The patches will be available at the following event locations:

Since 1922, the NFPA has sponsored the public observance of Fire Prevention Week. In 1925, President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed Fire Prevention Week a national observance, making it the longest-running public health observance in our country. During Fire Prevention Week, children, adults, and teachers learn how to stay safe in case of a fire. Firefighters provide lifesaving public education in an effort to drastically decrease casualties caused by fires.
 
Fire Prevention Week is observed each year during the week of October 9th in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871, and caused devastating damage. This horrific conflagration killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures, and burned more than 2,000 acres of land.
 
This year the Prescott Fire Department would like to remind you to check your smoke and CO detectors for proper operation. Detectors should be tested every month and the batteries should be replaced in your detectors at least every year. When replacing those batteries yearly, also take the time to vacuum or blow out the detectors at that time. Dust and bugs can collect in the detectors causing an alarm to sound.
